The 2021 wildfire season, predicted to be a difficult one, has been everything the experts said it would be. As you are likely aware, the Coconino and Kaibab national forests closed to the public beginning on June 23rd because of the “fire danger, dry conditions, and persistent wildfire activity during a time when firefighting resources are sparse,” according to the Forest Service.
“A full forest closure means that the public is prohibited from entering any part of Coconino National Forest at any time. Only those with private inholdings will be allowed access to their property, as well as personnel providing utility support where necessary, and firefighters performing their duties,” a news release said.
Additionally, the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest closed beginning at 6 a.m. on June 24. The Prescott National Forest and much of the Tonto National Forest both closed beginning at 8 a.m. on June 25.
Right now, as we continue to grapple with the impacts of the Backbone Fire, the Rafael Fire and the Snake Fire, the most important thing each of us needs is accurate information. Local Non-Profits Visit With Supervisor Michaels
While the wildfire has been top of mind for our office and all of us, the work of a Supervisor continues. I was happy to sit down recently with two amazing local groups that make a huge difference in Yavapai County.
Steps to Recovery Homes helps individuals learn to live without drugs and alcohol. Their goal? “To create a healthy, safe and structured environment for our clients, to help our community by giving people an opportunity to become productive members of society and lower the recidivism rates in the community. Steps to Recovery Homes is a viable placement for those who are serious about changing their lives.”
It was great to learn more about their mission. I look forward to working in collaboration with their leadership and the Northern Arizona Council of Governments on funding this non-profit for the fiscal year ahead.
I also sat down with the Sisterhood Connection Foundation. They have a fantastic and fun-filled weekend coming up in October. This fall fundraiser will benefit the Veterans Equine Therapeutic Association.
